Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum
Literacy Resources, Inc. (LRI) was formed in 2003 by Michael Heggerty, Ed.D. and his business partner, Thomas Corless, MBA, to publish the original primary version of Phonemic Awareness: The Skills That They Need to Help Them Succeed! In the ensuing years LRI published a kindergarten and a pre-kindergarten version in English, and Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Primary versions in Spanish. All versions of the curricula have been revised over the past five years, adding a kinesthetic component through the addition of hand motions, and incorporating the findings of recent research. Literacy Resources, Inc is the exclusive distributor of the works that are better known today as the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum.
In 2017 Literacy Resources, Inc. published Australian versions, which were modified from the US English versions to better suit an Australian audience. See our FAQs for more information on where the curriculum can be purchased in Australia.
In 2013, Alisa Van Hekken joined Literacy Resources, Inc. as the Director of Consulting Services. LRI currently offers professional development training on the implementation of our phonemic awareness curricula, along with follow-up sessions to provide implementation support throughout the school year. In 2018, Marjorie Bottari joined Literacy Resources, Inc. as a trainer for the phonemic awareness curricula.
More than 1,000 school districts nationwide have purchased and implemented the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum in their classrooms. Teachers in all fifty states and throughout Queensland, Australia are using the phonemic awareness lessons in their classroom each day, providing all students with explicit instruction in the foundational skills for reading.
The mission of Literacy Resources, Inc. is to provide elementary teachers, schools and districts with a cost-effective phonemic awareness curriculum to increase students’ literacy skills, while instilling a love of learning in those students.
